The Justice Ministry of Ukraine and the Council of Europe have signed the European Agreement on the Transmission of Applications for Legal Aid of 1977.

Justice Minister Pavlo Petrenko announced this on his page in Facebook, Ukrainian News Agency reports.

"We, together with the Secretary-General of the Council of Europe Jagland [Thorbjorn Jagland], have just signed the agreement on Ukraine's joining the European Agreement on the Transmission of Applications for Legal Aid," he wrote.

The document will enable Ukrainians living in one of 32 countries that have ratified the European Agreement on the Transmission of Applications for Legal Aid and citizens of these 32 countries living in Ukraine to have guaranteed legal aid.

Ukraine's joining the agreement became possible when a law was adopted "On free legal assistance" and the development of a large social project by the Justice Ministry of Ukraine - the system of free legal assistance.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko has empowered Justice Minister Pavlo Petrenko to sign the European Agreement on the Transmission of Applications for Legal Aid.
