Ukraine Asks Council Of Europe Human Rights Commissioner Muiznieks To Protect Detained Ukrainian Journalist Suschenko’s Rights In Russia

Ukraine has called on the Council of Europe’s Commissioner for Human Rights Nils Muiznieks to protect the rights of the Ukrinform national information agency’s journalist Roman Suschenko, who has been detained in Russia.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced this in a statement after a meeting between Muiznieks and Foreign Affairs Minister Pavlo Klimkin, Ukrainian News Agency reports.

Klimkin also said it was necessary to monitor the situation involving human rights in the Russia-annexed Crimea and informed the commissioner about the illegal actions of the Russian authorities in relation to the deputy head of the Crimean Tatar Mejlis, Ilmi Umerov.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, a Russian court has authorized arrest of Suschenko for two months.
