Ukraine reminds the United Nations Security Council about necessity to set up an international tribunal to prosecute those responsible for the crash of the aircraft of Malaysia Airlines in Donetsk region in July 2014.

Foreign Minister of Ukraine Pavlo Kilimkin gave the position in his statement at the UN Security Council ministerial meeting on Aviation Security, according to the transcript of the statement, Ukrainian News Agency reports.

Pavlo Kilimkin recalled that the crash of the aircraft of Malaysia Airlines took lives of 298 innocent passengers.

"This terrible atrocity is a potent reminder of the gravity of threat to the civil aviation from terrorist groups armed with sophisticated weapons. In this regard, I underscore the need for a full implementation of resolution 2166 (2014), in particular with regard to the Security Council demand to bring to account those responsible for this incident and to cooperate fully with efforts to establish accountability," he said.

He said Ukraine and other partner countries continued to investigate into the tragedy, although Russia blocked an initiative in 2015 on setting up an international tribunal by the UN Security Council.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, Ukraine and Australia coordinated efforts to bring to account those responsible of the crash of the aircraft of Malaysia Airlines in Donetsk region on 17 July 2014.
