The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine is likely to advise the Verkhovna Rada to stop working in the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe if the voting right of the Russian delegation is renewed.
Foreign Minister of Ukraine Pavlo Klimkin gave the position live on ICTV Channel commenting on the parliamentary elections in Russia set for September 18, including on the territory of the Crimea annexed by Russia, Ukrainian News Agency reports.
"If the powers of the Russian delegation, for example in the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, are positively recognized, we will be considering various options, up to a decision not to take part in the work of the PACE," he said.
He noted that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is not empowered to ban deputies of the Verkhovna Rada participating in the work of the PACE, as this is a sovereign right of the Parliament. However, the minister said he would advise a radical decision.
Dmytro Kuleba, a representative of Ukraine in the Council of Europe, said a number of officials of the PACE were interested in renewal of the voting right of the Russian delegation.
As Ukrainian News Agency reported, in April 2014 the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe suspended the voting right of the Russian delegation until the end of the session following the annexation of the Crimea.
The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe has extended the suspension several times for the armed aggression of Russia against Ukraine.
