A Ukrainian operation using drones against the energy infrastructure of the occupied Crimea has led to widespread and prolonged power outages. Hundreds of thousands of residents of the peninsula have been without electricity and water for a long time, and the targeted strikes on the power grid are intended to increase pressure on the kremlin, according to The New York Times.
The intense attack on energy facilities began in June and peaked in July. According to satellite imagery, the level of nighttime lighting on the peninsula has dropped to less than 20% of normal levels.
Occupation officials are downplaying the true scale of the crisis; however, according to russian diplomats, in just one week, approximately 1.4 million of the 2.5 million residents who lived there before the war were left without power.
As a result of the power outages, water pumps have stopped working. In the northern regions of Crimea, electricity and water supplies have been completely cut off for more than two weeks in a row. Even in the southern resort towns, particularly in Yalta, water is supplied for only a few hours a day, and in Yevpatoria, pay phones are being set up due to mobile network outages.
The occupation administration proved to be completely unprepared for the energy crisis. The proposed one-time compensation of RUB 15,000 for those affected does not even cover the minimum costs of purchasing and fueling generators. Amid fuel shortages, closed stores, and empty supermarket shelves, some local residents and tourists have already begun leaving the peninsula.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, it was previously noted that electricity consumption in Crimea has nearly halved.
