In Ukraine’s temporarily occupied territories (TOT), the russians are stepping up their practices of seizing housing from the local population, using so-called “laws” on “abandoned property” as a pretext. It was reported by the Center for Countering Disinformation (CCD).
For example, in the occupied Kherson Region, the invaders are preparing to “nationalize” as many as 1,172 residential buildings.
“The formal pretext is that the owners did not re-register their property according to Russian rules,” the CCD stated.
Also, according to the Center, in Dniprorudne in the Zaporizhzhia Region, people were forced to re-register by July 1, but it was virtually impossible to do so due to artificially created lines and limited operating hours at government offices. Furthermore, any real estate transactions are blocked for those who have not registered with the occupation military registration offices.
“Russia is systematically applying similar mechanisms in the Donetsk and Luhansk Regions and in Crimea,” the Center for Countering Disinformation noted.
Dmytro Lubinets, the Verkhovna Rada Commissioner for Human Rights, emphasized that this constitutes a large-scale illegal appropriation of Ukrainian property, which may constitute war crimes.
“The expropriation of housing in the temporarily occupied territories is part of Russia’s deliberate policy to displace the local Ukrainian population and replace it with Russian citizens,” the Center concluded.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, in the temporarily occupied territories of the Kherson Region, occupation officials have begun distributing military body armor.
