US President Donald Trump is approaching a decisive moment in the war with Iran, when he can either secure a 10-day ceasefire, or launch a large-scale military operation in conjunction with Israel to force Tehran to capitulate.
The American publication Axios reported this on Tuesday, July 21.
Trump has not yet made a final decision on how to proceed, but officials believe that the next few days will determine which path prevails. At the same time, there is little room for a protracted conflict with an uncertain outcome.
Unnamed sources speaking to Axios stated that Qatar, Egypt, Pakistan, and other regional mediators have presented the US and Iran with a proposal for a 10-day ceasefire. Washington is reviewing this proposal and has urged Israel to refrain from actions that could close the diplomatic window.
The new ceasefire proposal would halt hostilities, reopen both shipping lanes through the Strait of Hormuz, and give Washington and Tehran an opportunity to salvage their crumbling memorandum of understanding.
“We told the U.S. and Iran that we propose a cooling-off period,” one of the publication’s sources said.
However, Washington is simultaneously preparing for the talks to fail. In recent days, the US military has deployed dozens of fighter jets and refueling aircraft to the region, concentrating the forces necessary for a significant escalation of the conflict.
Israeli sources reported that Jerusalem has placed its armed forces on high alert and is preparing for a possible expansion of the war into a full-scale coordinated campaign in the coming days.
