US President Donald Trump has said that China tried to influence the 2020 US presidential election in favor of Joe Biden. He also claims to have declassified hundreds of intelligence documents that allegedly support these claims.

Trump made the statement on July 16 during a speech at the White House, the BBC reports.

According to the US President, the declassified materials indicate attempts by Beijing to influence the election results. Trump also accused China of illegally obtaining 220 million personal voter records.

The Chinese Embassy in Washington, in a statement to Reuters, rejected the accusations. The embassy said that China "has never interfered and will never interfere" in the US presidential election.

Trump's claims also contradict the official assessment of US intelligence. In 2021, the US National Intelligence Council reported that it had "high confidence" that China did not interfere in the 2020 presidential election.

The report noted that the Chinese leadership did not consider any of the possible election outcomes to be so advantageous that it would risk serious consequences if possible interference was revealed.

His speech also came after the publication of the results of a Washington Post-Ipsos poll. According to the study, the US President's approval rating has dropped to 37%.
