Explosion of ammunition in Vyshneve. SSU detains heads of defense company

Main points
  • The CEO of a defense contractor and his deputy have been detained for violating ammunition storage regulations.
  • A fire and the detonation of ammunition at warehouses in Vyshneve, Kyiv Region, occurred on July 6 following an attack by the russian federation.
  • The suspects are charged with professional negligence, which resulted in loss of life and property damage.

Counterintelligence and investigators from the Security Service of Ukraine (SSU) detained the CEO of a defense contractor and his deputy for production, who allowed ammunition to be stored in warehouses located near residential buildings in the city of Vyshneve in the Kyiv Region. This is stated in an SSU press release.

The investigation revealed that on July 6, as a result of a combined attack by the aggressor state, the russian federation, on the Kyiv Region, a fire broke out at the warehouses of a restricted-access facility, followed by the detonation of ammunition stored in the hangars.

Law enforcement officials determined that these storage facilities were not intended for ammunition storage and were being used without the necessary permits.

According to the case file, this occurred because the company’s CEO improperly organized its production and operational activities and failed to ensure compliance with fire safety requirements and regulatory acts governing the storage of ammunition and explosive substances.

In addition, his deputy allowed ammunition to be stored in unsuitable warehouse facilities in close proximity to residential areas. This resulted in the death and injury of people, as well as the destruction and damage of civilian property.

Currently, investigators from the Security Service have informed the detainees that they are suspected of official negligence resulting in serious consequences (Parts 2 and 3 of Article 367 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).

A motion is also being prepared to request that the court impose pretrial detention as a preventive measure against the suspects.

As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, Herman Smetanin has stepped down from his position as CEO of the joint-stock company Ukrainian Defense Industry. This occurred against the backdrop of the tragedy caused by explosions in Vyshneve, Kyiv Region, following a russian strike on an ammunition depot belonging to one of Ukroboronprom’s enterprises.
