The budget deficit of russia, the aggressor country, could exceed the official target by more than RUB 1 trillion (about RUB 12.8 billion) this year. Reuters reports this, citing data from the government’s budget portal.
According to the data, federal expenditures in 2026 are projected to reach RUB 45.11 trillion, compared to the RUB 44.07 trillion provided for in the budget law.
Projected revenues remain unchanged at RUB 40.28 trillion, which implies a budget deficit of RUB 4.83 trillion. In the 2026 budget, the russian government projected a deficit of RUB 3.79 trillion.
According to the russian Ministry of Finance, the budget deficit in the first half of the year amounted to RUB 5.73 trillion, or 2.5% of gross domestic product. This is 1.7 times higher than the figure for the same period last year.
This forecast comes as the Central Bank of the russian federation decides whether to continue lowering the key rate or leave it unchanged at its monetarypolicy meeting scheduled for next week.
Reuters notes that the Central Bank has previously repeatedly pointed to the growing budget deficit as one of the main inflationary risks.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, on June 1, Bloomberg reported, citing its own sources, that russian dictator vladimir putin had been warned that the russian federation’s budget was no longer able to sustain the colossal costs of the war.
As a reminder, in May of this year, russian State Duma member Renat Suleimanov stated that russia must end the war against Ukraine, as the economy cannot withstand its prolonged continuation.
