Ukraine has the opportunity to establish its own production of missiles for Patriot anti-aircraft missile systems after obtaining the appropriate license. However, the biggest problem will not be access to technology, but the duration of the production launch.
This was stated by Advisor to the Minister of Defense of Ukraine Serhii "Flash" Beskrestnov. At the same time, Bloomberg experts believe that the implementation of such a project may take several years.
According to Beskrestnov, after obtaining a license, the manufacturer transfers not only the right to produce missiles, but also a full package of necessary documentation and technical support.
"Don't listen to the pessimists. The production of Patriot missiles in Ukraine is possible," Flash emphasized.
He explained that along with the license, technological maps of production are transferred, specialists are trained, contacts of component suppliers are provided, and consultants are involved to launch production processes.
At the same time, according to him, the main obstacle is time.
"The only problem is time. All this can drag on for a year or more. It is even impossible to name the terms approximately, since we do not know, for example, how long it will take subcontractors to manufacture various components," Beskrestnov noted.
At the same time, the head of the defense department at Bloomberg Economics, Becca Wasser, assesses the prospects more restrainedly. In her opinion, setting up the production of Patriot missiles will require much more time.
"It takes years to create a Patriot missile, which means that the production of these missiles in Ukraine will not begin in the near future," Wasser said.
She stressed that Ukraine's successful ramp-up of drone production and other types of missiles does not mean that a similar result can be quickly achieved in the case of Patriot. According to the expert, American technologies are under strict control, production chains are already overloaded, and the creation of new capacities will require specialized equipment and personnel training.
Recall, Trump also noted that the United States will provide Ukraine with a license to produce interceptor missiles for the MIM-104 Patriot anti-aircraft missile systems, which are in service with the Ukrainian army.
