The United States is ready to provide Ukraine with security guarantees to save lives and stop the bloodshed. US President Donald Trump made this statement during a joint press conference with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Ankara on Wednesday, July 8.
The White House chief emphasized that his main motivation in this matter is the humanitarian aspect and his belief in the future of the Ukrainian state.
“We’re doing this to save lives. Look, Ukraine is very far away. An ocean separates us. I’m trying to save lives—so many people are dying. I also believe this is a country with enormous potential,” Donald Trump assured at the start of his meeting with his Ukrainian counterpart.
At the same time, the US president suggested that if a genuine diplomatic settlement is reached between Kyiv and Moscow, the nature of US involvement could change. According to him, once a full-fledged peace agreement is concluded between the parties to the conflict, the need for additional external security commitments from Washington will disappear on its own.
“If we reach a resolution, then we’ll have an agreement. Then security guarantees won’t be needed, and we won’t have to close the airspace,” the US president added.
Responding to journalists’ questions about the possible imposition of new economic sanctions against the aggressor country, Donald Trump limited himself to stating that russian dictator vladimir putin is already under “enormous pressure” to end the war as quickly as possible.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, Zelenskyy explained to Trump that he would not travel to moscow because “there are many drones in the air.”
