One of russia's largest oil refineries may have been targeted by drones: first footage emerges

Main points
  • Drones attacked the "Nizhnekamskneftekhim" petrochemical complex and the TANECO oil refinery in Nizhnekamsk, russia.
  • The targets of the attack may have been the Nizhnekamskneftekhim and TANECO facilities, which are part of the SIBUR holding companies and produce petroleum products.
  • Information regarding possible damage and consequences is still being verified; russian authorities have not commented on reports of the attack.

On the morning of July 8, drones reportedly attacked two major industrial facilities simultaneously in Nizhnekamsk, russia (Republic of Tatarstan)—the “Nizhnekamskneftekhim” petrochemical complex and the TANECO oil refinery. There has been no official confirmation of the strikes from russian authorities yet.

This has been reported by OSINT communities, including Exilenova+.

According to monitoring sources, explosions were initially reported in the vicinity of one of the industrial facilities. Later, information emerged that the TANECO oil refinery may also have been targeted. Photos and videos that likely show the aftermath of the strikes have already been posted online.

Local Telegram channels list the “Nizhnekamskneftekhim” plant—russia’s largest petrochemical complex and part of the SIBUR holding company—among the possible targets. At the same time, a number of OSINT sources suggest that TANECO—one of the country’s most modern and largest oil refineries—was also hit.

TANECO produces a wide range of petroleum products, including Euro-5 standard gasoline, diesel fuel, jet fuel, liquefied petroleum gases, petroleum coke, bitumen, and base oils.

As of this writing, russian authorities and plant management have not commented on reports of the attack, and information regarding possible damage and consequences is still being verified.

As a reminder, on July 6, the Ukrainian Armed Forces attacked an oil refinery in the Omsk Oblast of russia, the aggressor country. This facility is located nearly 2,500 kilometers from Ukraine’s state border.
