Kyrylo Budanov, the head of the Office of the President, believes that the war between russia and Ukraine has now escalated, and that in order to de-escalate the situation, the escalation must be taken to its maximum. Budanov made these remarks in an interview with RBC-Ukraine, the Ukrainian News agency reports.
In particular, when asked if there is a chance that the active phase of the war will end this year, Budanov answered in the affirmative.
“There is a chance, and the pace of negotiations was very good in the spring. Now we’ve all entered a phase of escalation—everyone understands that. To emerge from this escalation, it usually requires taking the escalation to its peak. That is, escalation now, followed by de-escalation and then a continuation of the dialogue. If the parties are interested in this… Peak escalation always leads either to catastrophe or to de-escalation. I hope we’ll move toward de-escalation,” he said.
Budanov believes that at some point, russia will become interested in ending this war.
At the same time, he believes that if the peace process and all negotiations fail to yield any concrete results, russia and Ukraine could remain at war for years to come.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, on July 4, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, following a phone call with US President Donald Trump, stated that he sees a real prospect for ending the war, and that the US’s resolve will be crucial to achieving this.
In June, Zelenskyy stated that Ukraine wants to end the war before winter but is preparing for a difficult, full-scale defense.
