The Security Service of Ukraine’s military counterintelligence, with the assistance of the Minister of Defense, the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, and the leadership of the military academy, thwarted a russian attempt to seize Ukraine’s latest developments in the field of unmanned technologies.

It was reported by the SSU, according to the Ukrainian News agency.

As a result of preemptive actions, a russian military intelligence agent (better known as the GRU) of critical importance to the russian federation was detained; he had been spying for the enemy at one of the leading academies of Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense. The russian agent turned out to be an associate professor at a research center. At the request of the russian GRU, he copied and sent project documentation on the Defense Forces’ latest strike drones to his handler in russia.

The agent also groundlessly dismissed the developments of Ukrainian arms manufacturers—which were undergoing expert evaluation of their tactical and technical characteristics—as unpromising. To this end, he prepared “negative” conclusions on test projects for unmanned and robotic systems, which he claimed were unsuitable for use in combat conditions. The SSU’s military counterintelligence documented the agent’s every move. Thanks to its proactive measures, the Security Service used him to misinform the enemy and prevented the transfer of secret developments from the Ukrainian defense industry to the occupiers.

In the final stage of the special operation, SSU officers caught the agent “red-handed” in his office as he was attempting to send new documents to his handler in russia. The associate professor had been recruited by russian intelligence officers through an acquaintance from russia. In exchange for carrying out espionage tasks, he hoped to receive a “position” in the russian federation’s occupation administration.

During a search of the detainee’s premises, two cell phones and computer equipment were found, which he had used for covert communication with the russian GRU. Investigators from the Security Service of Ukraine informed him that he is suspected of violating Part 2 of Article 111 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (treason committed under martial law). The agent is currently in custody. He faces life imprisonment with confiscation of property. The comprehensive operation was conducted jointly with investigators from the SSU Directorate in the Odesa Region under the procedural supervision of the Odesa Regional Prosecutor’s Office.

As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, the SSU detained a foreign national who, on behalf of the FSB, coordinated russian strikes on Kherson. The SSU also detained a State Border Guard Service inspector who mapped out routes for the russians to carry out airstrikes on Kyiv and the Chernihiv Region.
