Officials from the State Bureau of Investigation (SBI), in cooperation with the Main Directorate for Internal Security of the Security Service of Ukraine (SSU), detained the deputy director of a state-owned enterprise in the Dnipropetrovsk Region who attempted to bribe an SSU officer to avoid criminal liability.

It was reported by the State Bureau of Investigation (SBI), according to the Ukrainian News agency.

The official sought to avoid criminal liability in a case involving the embezzlement of the enterprise’s state property during the period leading up to its privatization. To this end, through an acquaintance, he contacted an SSU officer conducting the pretrial investigation and offered to pay him USD 50,000. The Security Service of Ukraine officer immediately reported the illegal offer to his superiors, which allowed law enforcement to document the unlawful actions.

The official was detained in Dnipro at a gas station while handing over the illegal benefit. He has been notified of his status as a suspect under Part 3 of Article 369 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (offering, promising, or providing an unlawful benefit to a public official in a position of responsibility). The issue of imposing a preventive measure in the form of pretrial detention is currently being decided. The penalty under this article provides for up to 8 years of imprisonment with confiscation of property. The Dnipropetrovsk Regional Prosecutor’s Office is overseeing the proceedings.
