The United States is effectively stopping accepting applications for political asylum from foreign citizens who are outside the country.

This was stated by Deputy White House Chief of Staff Stephen Miller.

The corresponding statement is reported by the USA Today portal.

"America's doors are completely closed to people seeking asylum," Miller said.

He says that the US will send asylum seekers to other countries. Miller also said that all asylum claims at the southwest border are always false, with most applicants either criminals or migrants seeking benefits.

His statement came after a Supreme Court ruling that tightens asylum rules for migrants arriving through Mexico. On June 25, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled by a six-to-three vote that the federal government is not required to consider asylum claims from aliens who arrive at a border crossing with Mexico but have not yet crossed into the United States.

The court noted that a person is considered to have arrived in the United States only after actually crossing the border. The author of the decision, Justice Samuel Alito, explained the decision: "A guest is not considered to have entered a house when he merely knocks on the door."

The court ruled that the Immigration and Nationality Act does not give a foreigner in Mexico the right to apply for asylum and does not obligate immigration officers to conduct a review.

Justice Sonia Sotomayor criticized the majority decision. According to her, it contradicts the spirit of the law, which allows anyone who is physically present in the United States or arrives in the country to apply for asylum.

"Many people will die as a result of this decision," she warned.

On the same day, the Supreme Court allowed the administration of President Donald Trump to end the granting of temporary protected person status (TPS) to citizens of Syria and Haiti who are in the United States without legal grounds. The administration has already begun the process of revoking TPS for 356,000 migrants from Syria and Haiti. Miller urged them to return to their homeland as soon as possible.

Strengthening immigration policy is a major project of the Donald Trump administration. On Inauguration Day, the President declared a national emergency at the southern border of the United States, tightened rules for entry into the country, refugee status, and citizenship, launched large-scale raids by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), and mass deportations of illegal immigrants.

In November 2025, Donald Trump announced his intention to completely stop immigration from third-world countries in order to give the US system a chance to recover.

According to him, the administration wants to cancel benefits and intends to deport millions of illegal immigrants, whom the authorities consider a threat to national security.
