Denmark will stop granting refugee status to Ukrainian men of draft age. The country’s government is drafting a law aimed at preventing Ukrainians from evading military conscription, according to the Kyiv Independent.

Danish Minister of Immigration Morten Bødskov stated that Copenhagen supports Ukraine in its fight for freedom.

“That is why we are now amending the Ukrainian special law, because it is not intended that our residence rules should be used to avoid mobilization,” the publication quotes him as saying.

If this law is passed, Ukrainian men subject to mobilization in their home country will no longer be eligible for a residence permit in Denmark.

Nearly 48,000 Ukrainians currently in Denmark will be able to remain in the country. Men who are exempt from military service will also continue to be eligible for protection status, as before.

As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, on June 1, the European news portal Euractiv wrote, citing sources, that the European Union is discussing narrowing the temporary protection program for Ukrainian men of draft age.

As a reminder, according to the Polish news portal RMF24, Polish authorities supported the idea of denying Ukrainian men of draft age the right to receive temporary protection status in the EU.

And on June 4, Austrian Foreign Minister Gerhard Karner stated that the EU will end the automatic granting of protection status to Ukrainian men of draft age in March 2027.
