Russian drones strikes two merchant ships near Ukrainian ports; sailor from Egypt killed

On the night of June 22, russian drones attacked two civilian merchant ships that were heading for Ukrainian ports. A 58-year-old crew member of the dry cargo ship VICTRESS—an Egyptian citizen—was killed in the attack.

It was reported by the Ukrainian Navy.

According to Oleksii Kuleba, Minister of Communities and Territories Development, a fire broke out on the Panamanian-flagged vessel following the attack. The Ukrainian Navy clarified that the vessel in question was the dry cargo ship VICTRESS, owned by a Turkish company.

As a result of the strike, a 58-year-old cook from Egypt, who was part of the ship’s crew, was killed. Eight other sailors, including citizens of Turkey and India, were evacuated by a rescue vessel.

The Navy noted that the VICTRESS sustained significant damage and is no longer seaworthy.

Additionally, according to Kuleba, russian forces attacked vessels flying the flags of Palau and Belize last night.

The Ukrainian Navy stated that this incident posed a threat to civilian shipping and constituted a violation of international maritime law.

Meanwhile, on the night of June 22, a woman was killed as a result of a russian drone attack on Zaporizhzhia. Three other people were injured, including an 11-year-old boy.
