US President Donald Trump stated that Washington would consider reinstating sanctions against russian energy resources if global oil supplies resume.
According to Ukrinform, Trump told reporters this during a meeting with United Arab Emirates President Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan on the sidelines of the G7 summit.
Trump was asked whether the US could extend and tighten sanctions against russia.
“We will be able to do that in the near future, since oil is already being supplied,” Trump replied.
According to him, the exemption for russian oil was temporary. It was necessary to avoid disrupting oil supplies to the global market.
As a reminder, in late February, Israel and the US launched a war against Iran, which led to the blockade of shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. This disrupted the supply route for crude oil from the Persian Gulf countries.
In March, the US granted a one-month exemption from sanctions on russian oil, allowing traders to enter into deals without fear of secondary sanctions. In April and May, Washington extended the exemption. The second extension expires on June 17.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, in March, US Energy Secretary Chris Wright stated that Washington’s policy toward the energy sector remains unchanged and that russian oil will remain subject to sanctions.
