Kyiv making thorough preparations for winter: 60 MW of distributed generation facilities already built, and more than 100 MW under construction - Klitschko

In preparation for the coming winter, Kyiv has already built distributed power generation facilities with a total capacity of 60 MW and is continuing to build additional facilities with a capacity of 100 MW. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko announced this and demonstrated the operation of new cogeneration units at one of the city’s critical infrastructure sites.

“The capital continues to prepare for the coming winter and implement the Comprehensive City Resilience Plan, which the Kyiv City Council adopted in March. Today, I inspected the cogeneration equipment at one of the critical infrastructure sites. Four powerful cogeneration units were recently installed here. Each has a capacity of 4.5 MW, for a total capacity of 18 MW. The units are currently operational and feeding electricity into Ukraine’s unified power grid. At the same time, construction of the second-level protection system is being completed,” said Vitali Klitschko.

The mayor reported that construction of new distributed cogeneration facilities with a capacity of about 60 MW has now been completed. Another 100 MW of capacity is currently under construction.

“In total, we should gain about 200 MW of additional cogeneration capacity this year. To date, in particular, we have already installed three diesel generator sets with a capacity of over 15 MW, which will ensure an uninterrupted power supply to water supply facilities. Overall, this year we plan to secure about 40 MW of reserve capacity for water supply systems,” he noted.

Klitschko emphasized that Kyiv has worked to develop a list of measures that would best address the challenges of last winter and the potential risks of the coming one. A series of expert consultations were held, and the resilience plan was refined and improved.

“It has a clear structure of critical priorities, with designated responsible parties and realistic funding levels. In total, this includes nearly 200 projects, tasks, and measures across key sectors. Work is ongoing in all areas. At various locations and construction sites,” the mayor said.

He also emphasized that Kyiv expects corresponding action from the government.

"As of today, Kyiv has an agreement with the government regarding the prioritization of energy resilience measures. Implementing these measures will cost approximately UAH 30 billion. Furthermore, funding for these measures will be split 50/50 between the city and the state. The capital is taking a major step forward and is exploring every opportunity to secure funding for the resilience plan’s measures. We expect the state to take an equal stance and provide its financial contribution!” stated Vitali Klitschko.

As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, Klitschko previously reported that Kyiv is creating a backup heat and energy supply system, but this requires a lot of resources and financial assistance from the state.
