US President Donald Trump said a truce with Iran could be signed "this weekend", and the country's supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, has reportedly agreed to sign it.

He made the remarks during a meeting with reporters in the Oval Office of the White House, Bloomberg reports.

According to Trump, he called the upcoming document "a very strong memorandum of understanding". It is said to include the reopening of shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and a commitment by Tehran not to develop nuclear weapons.

"We ended the war with Iran today. […] We made a great deal. There will be no nuclear weapons. People will start coming home very soon. It's almost done. We got everything we wanted," Trump said.

Iran's Fars News Agency, citing an unnamed source, reported that Iranian officials had not approved the full text of any agreement with the United States.

According to an unnamed American official and a diplomat from one of the mediating countries, the new "memorandum of understanding" provides for a 60-day ceasefire, including in Lebanon, the opening of the Strait of Hormuz to shipping without fees, and partial easing of sanctions against Iran.

As part of these agreements, the United States is to end the naval blockade, and the parties are to continue negotiations on the nuclear program.

The day before, Washington and Tehran exchanged blows in the Middle East despite a previous ceasefire agreed in April. Then Donald Trump stated that the agreement was violated most often in the world, and threatened a forceful response if the new agreement was rejected.
