On the night of June 10, during the pogroms in Belfast, which were accompanied by the burning of houses and cars, the house of the family of 19-year-old Ukrainian refugee Yaroslava Navrotska was damaged.
This is reported by the British media BBC and GB News.
On the night of June 10, the attackers set fire to a house on the opposite side of the street. Hearing the screams and noise of the crowd, she left the apartment through the back door and fled with her dog to her friends who live in a safer district of the city.
Yaroslava is currently temporarily staying with friends. She plans to move with her landlord.
Riots in Belfast
What caused the riots in the city
The riots in Belfast began after an attack that occurred on June 9. According to media reports, 30-year-old Sudanese citizen Hadi Alodid stabbed Steven Ogilvy. The victim lost an eye, suffered serious neck and back injuries and remains in hospital.
After that, hundreds of masked people took to the streets of districts where migrants live. During the riots, cars, houses, buses and garbage cans were set on fire. Some residents were evacuated. Police recorded at least 62 incidents in one evening.
What was the reaction of the victims and the victim's family?
According to British media, most of the victims of the pogroms were black residents of the city, including people who had lived in the local community for over 20 years.
Steven Ogilvy's family called for an end to the violence and said that they did not want the tragedy to be used to incite hatred or divide society. The victim's relatives also stressed that they support peaceful forms of protest.
On June 10, Hadi Alodid was taken to court, which ruled to keep him in custody.
We remind you that even after the end of hostilities, a mass return of Ukrainians from abroad should not be expected. According to experts, only 10-15% of citizens who left during the war can return home.
