Pope Leo XIV blessed 21 ambulances, one pickup truck, and nine other vehicles that Argentine nun Lucía Caram and her team had collected for delivery to Ukraine. It was reported by America Magazine.
In Barcelona, the pontiff stepped out of his car to greet Lucía Caram and bless the 21 ambulances, one pickup truck, and nine other vehicles destined for Ukraine. The Pope blessed each vehicle and ambulance individually, sprinkling them with Holy Water. Afterward, he greeted the nun and members of the board of the foundation she established to oversee her humanitarian work.
"He was very warm and very close. He thanked me for letting him bless the ambulances. I told him that it was very important to bring the situation in Ukraine to the world’s attention, to focus on Ukraine. He told me it was an issue that worried him a lot. I said that people needed to hear him speak about Ukraine, and he said that peace really is under threat and to convey my closeness and friendship to them [in Ukraine]," said Sister Lucía.
She also reported that the pontiff was given a sealed box containing a Ukrainian flag, called the “victory box,” which is to be opened after the war ends. The Pope was also presented with a crocheted nun made by Ukrainian women and a doll made by women in the foundation’s workshops.
Immediately after receiving the Pope’s blessing, Sister Lucia set off for Ukraine with ambulances and over 60 drivers—two per vehicle—and a dozen volunteers. On June 12, they will cross the border into Ukraine.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, on May 27, Pope Leo XIV stated that he is following the russian-Ukrainian war with concern, commenting on the recent massive shelling of Ukraine, which once again claimed civilian lives.
