Finnish President Alexander Stubb has stated that it is necessary to initiate a dialogue with vladimir putin, as Ukraine is currently in a strong position. At the same time, he rejected the idea of becoming Europe’s chief representative in potential negotiations with the kremlin. It was reported by MTV Uutiset following a press conference between Stubb and Kenyan President William Ruto.
The Finnish leader believes that the “European Three” consisting of France, Germany, and the United Kingdom should represent the European side in the ceasefire negotiation process.
Alexander Stubb himself does not see himself in the role of Europe’s chief negotiator, noting that such a process should be led by major players, while Finland or Norway can effectively contribute to diplomatic efforts behind the scenes.
The Finnish president explained the need to initiate contacts with the Russian leadership by noting that now is a favorable time thanks to Ukraine’s strong positions on the front lines, in politics, and in the economy. According to Alexander Stubb, it is precisely these factors that give Europe grounds to begin diplomatic negotiations.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, meanwhile, former German Chancellor Angela Merkel is skeptical of the idea that she could serve as a mediator in potential negotiations between the European Union and the aggressor country, russia, regarding the end of the russian-Ukrainian war.
As a reminder, according to media reports, discussions are continuing within the European Union regarding potential candidates for the role of EU negotiator with russia. In particular, the discussions center on several individuals, including former German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Finnish President Alexander Stubb, and former Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi.
