This year, the Norwegian government will allocate NOK 1.2 billion (EUR 109.4 million) for the development and procurement of maritime drones for Ukraine as part of the Nansen Program. This will also include the supply of unmanned vessels from both Norwegian and Ukrainian industries.
This is stated on the Norwegian government’s website.
"The Norwegian maritime industry is a global leader. I am pleased that this expertise can also be used to support Ukraine’s fight for freedom. Ukraine uses maritime drones for reconnaissance, offensive operations, and to defend against Russian attacks," said Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre.
On Tuesday, Støre met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy during a meeting of the heads of government of the Nordic and Baltic countries in Tallinn, where Zelenskyy was the guest of honor.
It is noted that the export of grain and other goods via the Black Sea is crucial for the Ukrainian economy and international food security. As part of Norwegian-Ukrainian industrial cooperation, maritime surface drones are being developed to help ensure the security of this trade route.
Norway and the United Kingdom lead a coalition of naval forces in support of Ukraine. Since its creation in 2023, the government has emphasized the use of Norwegian maritime expertise and industry to support Ukraine in its struggle against russia.
"To continue Norway’s support for these efforts, the government has decided to allocate NOK 1.2 billion from the Nansen Program (Norway’s civilian and military support program for Ukraine – ed.) for the development and procurement in 2026 with deliveries from Norwegian and Ukrainian industries," the prime minister noted.
In accordance with the government’s proposal, Støre decided to extend military support for Ukraine in 2026 in the amount of NOK 70 billion (approximately EUR 6.37 billion). The funds are allocated in close consultation with Ukrainian authorities to ensure they are used where they have the greatest impact for Ukraine.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, meanwhile, Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre stated that Norway will be under France’s nuclear umbrella.
