The Cabinet of Ministers is preparing a package of measures aimed at reducing traffic accidents and improving road discipline. Prime Minister Yuliia Svyrydenko announced this on her Telegram channel, according to the Ukrainian News agency.
In particular, the government intends to:
increase penalties for systematic traffic violations, particularly for speeding;
increase penalties for drivers who systematically exceed speed limits;
improve the system for automatic and manual recording of violations;
legislatively regulate the use of light personal electric vehicles.
Svyrydenko emphasized that final decisions must take public input into account.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, the driver of a Mercedes who lost control of the vehicle on June 5 and drove at high speed into a pedestrian area in Kyiv, killing four people, has been detained in accordance with legal procedures and is currently in custody.
In the center of Ivano-Frankivsk, in the pedestrian zone, the use of electric scooters has been banned; the city has become the first in Ukraine where local authorities have prohibited their use. The initiative is explained by numerous violations and traffic accidents.
