In May, the net gain in liberated territory compared to lost territory was 100 square kilometers in Ukraine’s favor; in total, more than 600 square kilometers of Ukrainian territory have been liberated since the beginning of 2026. Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Oleksandr Syrskyi has reported this on Facebook, according to the Ukrainian News agency.

"Defense forces continue to maintain the initiative in certain areas. As a result of active operations in May, the ratio of liberated to lost territory stands at nearly +100 square kilometers in our favor. In total, over 600 square kilometers of Ukrainian territory have been liberated since the beginning of the year," he said.

According to the Commander-in-Chief, the situation on the front remains complex and dynamic; the enemy continues to attempt advances in eastern and southern Ukraine, the number of combat engagements has increased significantly, with the most intense fighting taking place in the Pokrovsk, Oleksandrivka, and Huliaipole sectors.

As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, Syrskyi previously stated that the enemy is concentrating its forces in the Oleksandrivka, Huliaipole, and Orikhiv sectors, with the total number of troops now exceeding 140,000.

In May, the analytical project DeepState reported that Ukrainian forces had liberated the village of Odradne in the Kharkiv Region. According to analysts, the Defense Forces regained control of the settlement and its surroundings following a successful operation.

In May, Syrskyi stated that the Ukrainian Defense Forces are attempting to shift from a “war of attrition” to an asymmetric strategy to effectively counter the significantly larger russian army, with the main tasks of the Ukrainian military being to halt the enemy’s advance, launch effective counterattacks, and strike at the enemy’s rear.
