NATO countries are considering the possibility of allocating EUR 70 billion in new military aid to Ukraine, which is planned to be announced during the alliance's summit in Ankara next month.
Diplomats from NATO announced this to Politico, Ukrainian News Agency reports.
According to them, the proposal circulated by Germany last month will provide for a new mechanism to increase the transparency of Ukraine's financing.
This is happening against the background of complaints from some states that they bear disproportionately large costs to support Kyiv.
"The key is to get a firm commitment from Ankara to continue providing important support to Ukraine on a sustainable and fairer basis," noted a high-ranking NATO diplomat.
Also, support for Ukraine will be one of the main issues that will be discussed at the summit of NATO leaders on July 7-8.
At the same time, Ukraine's ambassador to NATO Alyona Hetmanchuk told Politico that any new commitments should be focused on Kyiv's priorities, such as air defense, investments in the production of drones and missiles, as well as extended-range munitions.
"Until Ukraine receives effective security guarantees, we can only rely on financial guarantees provided by our partners," she added.
Politico writes that after rejecting Rutte's proposal last month to allocate 0.25% of GDP to help Ukraine, the allies are considering a German initiative.
A meeting of NATO defense ministers later this month provides an opportunity to reach an agreement.
As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, the United Nations Security Council will hold an emergency meeting at the request of Ukraine after another wave of russian attacks on Ukrainian cities.
Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Andrii Sybiha announced that the meeting will be held on June 8 and will be devoted to the consequences of the last massive russian strike.
