President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has given officials until Friday, June 12, to reach an agreement with partners regarding the Patriot air defense systems: there must be clarity on the implementation of the agreement, or personnel decisions will be made. Zelenskyy announced this on his Telegram channel, according to the Ukrainian News agency.
Zelenskyy specifically noted that he held a meeting regarding additional avenues for supplying air defense systems and missiles to Ukraine. The meeting was attended by representatives of the Ministry of Defense, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the National Security and Defense Council, and the Office’s diplomatic team.
He noted that there is an agreement at the highest political level regarding the purchase of "Patriots" for Ukraine, and this agreement is awaiting implementation at the financial, legal, and technical levels; the wait has dragged on.
"The task is absolutely clear—to speed up this contract for the Patriots, and this is the personal responsibility of the officials involved. Funds from the European support package for Ukraine, amounting to 90 billion euros, and our other financial resources must be utilized as quickly as possible to fulfill precisely those tasks that ensure the protection of Ukrainian lives," he said.
According to Zelenskyy, as of today, even the legal steps for this contract have not yet been worked out.
"I have set a final deadline—one week for all preparatory steps. I am counting on a report on Friday: either clarity regarding the implementation of our agreement on the 'Patriots,' or serious personnel consequences," he said.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, Zelenskyy wrote a letter to Trump warning that Ukraine is running out of air defense systems.
Ukraine wants to obtain licenses to manufacture missiles for the Patriot system.
