Washington intends to lift the temporary exemptions from the sanctions regime on russian oil in the near future. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio made this statement at a press conference in response to a question from Democratic Party representative Jeanne Shaheen.
According to him, the current exemptions were introduced at the time solely to expand global supplies of raw materials, while the US government’s fundamental policy remains unchanged.
The official clearly outlined Washington’s position on the need to return to full restrictions against the aggressor as soon as possible.
"We would like to end it as soon as we possibly can, because the underlying policy of this country has been to sanction their oil," Rubio emphasized.
At the same time, the Secretary of State clarified that the final decision on lifting the exemption will be made by the US Department of the Treasury, which will take into account current circumstances and stability in the global market at the time the issue is considered.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, the day before, the US lifted sanctions restrictions on the purchase of russian oil and petroleum products transported by sea for 30 days, contrary to previous public assurances not to renew the relevant licenses.
As a reminder, russia failed to export oil through the Baltic Sea despite the easing of US sanctions.
