Even under martial law, Kyiv continues to develop its transportation infrastructure. The capital’s mayor, Vitali Klitschko, spoke about this in an interview with the “Kyiv” TV channel.
"We are currently repairing several major transportation arteries. Because the proper condition of roads, bridges, and overpasses is essential for the functioning of a large city. Right now, it’s very important to bring the Metro Bridge up to standard. Despite the heavy traffic and the subway running there, we’re not blocking traffic. We’re designing and reconstructing the Paton Bridge. The Reconstruction Agency initially took it over to repair it. They didn’t do anything there and have now returned it in even worse condition. And we’ve lost time. But we need to maintain the operation of a massive infrastructure. And that’s what we’re doing,” Vitali Klitschko said.
The mayor also discussed the ongoing construction of new subway stations.
"We have accelerated the pace of subway construction in Vynohradar. This is an extremely important transportation artery. And I want to emphasize that today the subway serves a dual purpose. It not only transports passengers but also serves as a shelter during enemy attacks on the capital. And soon, some of the new subway stations in Vynohradar will be practically completed," Klitschko noted.
Regarding the subway to Troieshchyna, he emphasized that work on the Podil-Voskresenka Bridge had to be completed first.
"We have already opened this major structure—which took 20 years to build—to vehicular traffic. Three stations for the future subway line have already been built within the bridge structure. The next stage is the construction of the underground section. Unfortunately, during the war, we cannot yet give a clear timeline for completion. Once the war ends, this project will be implemented as quickly as possible," Klitschko emphasized.
