The Swedish company Saab, which manufactures Gripen fighter jets, is considering opening a plant in Canada to produce and export aircraft to Ukraine.

It was reported by The Canadian Press, citing the company’s deputy CEO, Anders Carp.

According to him, this option would become possible if Canada decides to purchase dozens of Gripen fighters for its Armed Forces.

“This has been discussed and proposed with Canada: if they choose the Gripen and want production in Canada, this could be one of the locations for shipping Gripens to Ukraine,” Carp said, adding that Ottawa has not provided Saab with any deadlines for completing this review.

He also noted that the production of a single Gripen aircraft takes up to 36 months.

Meanwhile, it is noted that on Wednesday, May 27, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced that the country is entering into negotiations with Saab regarding the purchase of a fleet of new surveillance aircraft.

As a reminder, it was reported the day before that Ukrainian reconnaissance drones would be manufactured in Canada, and the finished equipment would be transferred to the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, on May 28, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson signed a declaration on deepening cooperation and agreed to transfer 16 Gripen fighter jets to Ukraine.
