Belarusian opposition politician Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya arrived in Kyiv and visited the grave of Maria Zaitseva, a Belarusian volunteer who was killed in action.

She shared this on her Telegram channel.

In Kyiv, Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya began her visit with a trip to the burial site of Belarusian volunteer Maria Zaitseva, who was killed during hostilities in Ukraine. In her post, the politician noted that this step was important to her as the first during "She symbolizes not only our resistance to dictatorship, but also Ukrainian-Belarusian solidarity. It was very important for me to begin this visit by honoring a person who gave her life for the freedom of Ukraine and Belarus," she explained.

Prior to this, the Belarusian politician thanked Ukrzaliznytsia for organizing her trip to Kyiv and posted a personalized train ticket with the route “Full Przemysl — Free Kyiv — Free Minsk.”

Information about the preparations for the visit had previously been announced by Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha. He reported on Tsikhanouskaya’s arrival amid statements by Aleksandr Lukashenko regarding the possibility of a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. For his part, Sybiha noted that “the Ukrainian side has someone to meet with.”

Who is Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya

Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya is a Belarusian political figure who became the main opposition candidate in the 2020 Belarusian presidential election following the arrest of her husband, Siarhei Tsikhanouski.

After the election, she denounced widespread fraud and claimed that she had in fact defeated Lukashenko, but was forced to leave the country. Since then, she has been in exile and positions herself as the leader of the democratic opposition in Belarus and the head of the United Transitional Cabinet.

Her role today is to represent the Belarusian opposition internationally, work with the governments of other countries, and support democratic change in Belarus.
