The Ministry of Foreign Affairs recommends that citizens of Ukraine refrain from traveling to the region of the Democratic Republic of the Congo affected by the Ebola epidemic.
This is announced in the statement of the department.
"In connection with the official confirmation on May 17, 2026 by the World Health Organization of the fact of the outbreak of the Ebola virus epidemic in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine recommends that citizens of Ukraine refrain from traveling to the region affected by the epidemic," the message says.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs specified that the virus is rapidly spreading in the provinces of Ituri and South Kivu.
The department also gave recommendations to Ukrainian citizens who are already in the territory of the Democratic Republic of Congo:
- to refrain from traveling to the aforementioned provinces;
- to strictly follow the instructions of local competent authorities;
- to constantly monitor official messages from the Embassy of Ukraine in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
In the event of an emergency, Ukrainians are advised to contact the hotline of the Embassy of Ukraine in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said that he was "deeply concerned about the scale and speed" of the deadly Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda.
A rare strain of the Ebola virus, Bundibujo, is spreading rapidly in the Democratic Republic of Congo, against which there is currently no registered vaccine. The World Health Organization has declared the outbreak a public health emergency of international concern.
