German Chancellor Friedrich Merz expressed hope that Chinese leader Xi Jinping would persuade russian dictator vladimir putin to end the war in Ukraine.
He told reporters this, according to Reuters.
Merz noted that the meeting between Xi and putin is not expected to bring about any drastic changes in the strategic relations between russia and China.
"We naturally associate this visit with the hope that President Xi will also urge President Putin to end this war in Ukraine, which he cannot win," he added.
According to the chancellor, Germany is following putin’s visit to Beijing “very closely.”
"We have also noted various statements made during the previous meeting between President Xi Jinping and President Trump. We have taken note of these with interest," Merz noted.
As a reminder, China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs called a report by the Financial Times, according to which Chinese leader Xi Jinping stated in a conversation with US President Donald Trump that russian leader vladimir putin might regret invading Ukraine, “pure fabrication”.
Meanwhile, russian dictator vladimir putin traveled to Beijing on Tuesday for talks with Chinese leader Xi Jinping as part of his first foreign visit this year. According to Bloomberg, putin plans to discuss the "Power of Siberia-2" gas pipeline project to China.
