A visit by a Ukrainian delegation, likely to be personally led by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, is expected in Serbia at the end of the week.
This was reported by the N1 TV channel, citing sources.
Although there was no official confirmation of Zelenskyy's possible visit to Belgrade, diplomatic sources in Belgrade expect that a joint memorandum of understanding on trade cooperation between the two countries may be signed soon.
If this information is confirmed, this will be Zelensky's first visit to Serbia since he took office in 2019 and since the beginning of the russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
The publication noted that contacts between the Presidents of Serbia and Ukraine took place mainly during international political summits in which both leaders participated.
The first direct negotiations between the Presidents of Serbia and Ukraine since the beginning of the war took place in late August 2023. The meeting and negotiations took place in Athens at the "Ukraine - South-Eastern Europe" summit. On this occasion, Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić announced that Serbia would continue to support and respect the territorial integrity of Ukraine. Vučić described the negotiations as open, friendly and constructive.
At the same summit, a declaration was adopted and signed condemning russia's aggression against Ukraine. Vučić emphasized at the time that he managed to ensure that the declaration did not call for sanctions against russia.
Recall that, meanwhile, Serbia took part in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) exercises for the first time in its history. About 600 Serbian army soldiers took part in the exercises called "NATO-Serbia".
