During the summit in Beijing, Chinese leader Xi Jinping told US President Donald Trump that russian dictator vladimir putin may regret his decision to launch a full-scale invasion of Ukraine. This was reported by the Financial Times, citing several sources familiar with the American assessment of the summit.

This is the first known case when a Chinese leader gave such a critical assessment of the actions of the Kremlin leader. According to a source familiar with Xi Jinping's previous meetings with former President Joe Biden, the talks about russia and Ukraine were also frank, but the Chinese leader never personally assessed putin and his decisions.

So far, the Chinese embassy in Washington has not responded to a request for comment, and the White House has refused to comment on these data. At the same time, the official report on the summit does not contain any mention of putin or Ukraine. Journalists note that during these same negotiations, Donald Trump made an unexpected initiative, proposing that the United States, China and russia unite in opposing the International Criminal Court due to the alleged coincidence of interests of the three states in this issue. Although the Trump administration has consistently criticized the ICC, the White House has so far refrained from commenting on this proposal.

These resonant statements were made against the background of preparations for the visit of vladimir putin himself to China, who is scheduled to arrive in Beijing on Tuesday, May 19, just four days after Trump's departure. The russian dictator's next visit is timed to coincide with the 25th anniversary of the signing of the Sino-russian Treaty of Friendship, and also takes place three years after Xi and putin announced an "unlimited" partnership on the eve of the russian federation's full-scale attack on Ukraine.
