Liner with hantavirus outbreak to arrive in Rotterdam: part of crew to be quarantined

The MV Hondius cruise ship, on board of which a hantavirus outbreak was recorded, is to complete its route in the port of Rotterdam. The Dutch authorities have already prepared quarantine measures for crew members and medical personnel.

According to the agency, 25 crew members and two medical workers remain on board, for whom quarantine has been introduced.

Local authorities have also prepared special quarantine centers for foreign workers on the ship. At the same time, it is not yet known whether they will be there for the entire 42-day isolation period.

Some residents of the Netherlands have expressed concern about the arrival of the liner in Rotterdam. People fear that not everyone will be able to strictly adhere to quarantine rules. At the same time, the majority do not believe that the situation will develop into a new pandemic.

Recall that a cruise liner in the Atlantic Ocean had an outbreak of hantavirus, there are deaths. Initially, the liner was denied permission to dock when there were still almost 150 people on board.

More than 20 passengers of the MV Hondius liner, on which an outbreak of hantavirus later occurred, left the ship shortly before quarantine was declared on it.

Now Spain has agreed to accept the MV Hondius cruise ship, on which an outbreak of hantavirus was recorded. The ship headed for the Canary Islands. Five Ukrainians were on board the MV Hondius liner with hantavirus. One of them has already been evacuated, and the remaining five crew members will help bring the ship to a Dutch port.

Doctors say that dozens of cases of hantavirus infection are recorded in Ukraine every year.

The Argentine Ministry of Health reported that 28 deaths from hantavirus were recorded in 2025, which is 15 times more than the average mortality rate five years earlier.

World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus called on countries around the world to increase preparedness for a possible increase in hantavirus cases.
