From May 2026, a program will be launched in Malta, under which citizens will be able to receive a free annual subscription to ChatGPT Plus, provided that they complete an online course on the basics of artificial intelligence. The agreement to launch the initiative was signed by the country's government and OpenAI.
This is stated on the OpenAI website.
Access to the free subscription will be opened only to those citizens who complete a training course developed by the University of Malta. The program covers the basic principles of artificial intelligence and practices for the responsible use of technology in everyday life and professional activities.
It is separately provided that citizens of the country living outside Malta will also be able to participate in the course.
The launch of the program is scheduled for May 2026.
Minister of Economy, Entrepreneurship and Strategic Projects Silvio Schembri said that the country is the first to implement a partnership of this scale, as it seeks to prevent citizens from falling behind digitally.
As a reminder, half of Ukrainians positively perceive communication with chatbots and AI assistants of brands, but in complex and sensitive issues, the majority still prefer live people.
