The UN Security Council is convening an emergency meeting on May 19 in response to the escalation of attacks by russia, the aggressor state, against Ukraine.
Ukraine’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Andrii Melnyk, has announced this.
"On 19 May, the UN Security Council will convene, upon our request, an urgent meeting to address the unprecedented escalation of Russia’s barbaric attacks against Ukraine’s civilian population," the statement reads.
In a letter to the President of the UN Security Council, Melnyk reported on the intensification of russian attacks in recent weeks against Ukraine’s civilian population and critical infrastructure. In particular, the letter notes that from May 4 to May 11, russian armed forces launched approximately 600 attack drones and 16 ballistic missiles at cities and towns across Ukraine. Across the country, more than 40 civilians were killed and over 200 were wounded.
According to him, May 5 became one of the deadliest days for the civilian population in recent months of russia’s war against Ukraine, despite President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s announcement of a ceasefire that was supposed to take effect on the night of May 5–6.
He also noted that on May 13, the russian federation launched more than 800 drones against Ukraine, resulting in the deaths of at least eight civilians and the wounding of dozens more, including children.
"In light of this appalling new level of escalation and brutality reached by Russia’s war of extermination, I feel compelled to request the convening of a meeting of the United Nations Security Council, in accordance with Articles 34 and 33 of the Charter of the United Nations, under the agenda item “Maintenance of peace and security of Ukraine,” to address this serious matter,” the letter states.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, emergency repair work is still underway at the site of the russian strike on a building in the Darnytskyi District, which claimed the lives of 24 people.
