Kaja Kallas, the European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, suggested that she herself might become the EU’s chief negotiator in future talks with the russian federation. She made this statement during a press conference following a meeting of the EU Council, according to RBC-Ukraine.
The head of European diplomacy emphasized that her professional experience allows her to effectively counter the kremlin’s manipulations.
Kallas noted that her long career in the legal field has prepared her for complex processes where it is important to spot hidden threats.
"I spent half of my working life as a lawyer, a partner in a law firm, and participated in many negotiations. I am able to spot the traps that russia usually sets in such processes," the official emphasized.
At the same time, the EU’s top diplomat noted that the European Union is not currently at the stage of entering into a peaceful dialogue. According to her, moscow has not yet demonstrated a willingness to engage in good-faith negotiations, and discussions are still ongoing within the EU itself regarding a unified list of demands for the aggressor country.
"We do not see Russia actually negotiating in good faith. And, of course, we are discussing what we want to see from Russia," Kaja Kallas concluded.
According to the European representative, before any official dialogue begins, the bloc’s member states must reach a consensus on the conditions upon which a reliable and just peace can be based.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, the EU rejected the candidacy of the former German chancellor as a negotiator with russia.
