NATO officials expect that US President Donald Trump may order the reduction of the US military contingent in Europe, following the example of what happened earlier with Germany. In particular, the presence of US troops in Italian bases is under threat. This is reported by Bloomberg.
In an interview with the Italian media outlet Corriere della Sera, Trump confirmed that he was considering such a possibility, and linked it to the lack of support from Rome in the past.
"Italy was not there when we needed it. I was always there for Italy, as was my country," the American President said, recalling the lack of Italian support during the operation in Iran.
Instead, sources suggest that the released forces may be redirected to Poland.
In addition to the redeployment of personnel, according to NATO sources, Trump may cancel the previously approved plan of the Joe Biden administration to deploy long-range missiles on German territory. The new White House strategy may also include the termination of US participation in certain military exercises and the transfer of units from states with which the President is dissatisfied to countries that he considers more favorable to his policies.
Recall that it was previously reported that Trump plans to withdraw US troops from Germany and Spain due to their refusal to support the war in Iran.
