President of the European Council António Costa says that the EU is ready to participate in any talks that will result in peace for Ukraine.
He said this in Brussels, answering a question from own correspondent of the Interfax-Ukraine agency about the vision of possible EU talks with the russian federation and the mood on this issue among the leaders of the EU member states, taking into account the already stated position of Moscow that they will not initiate such talks.
"Our main goal from the first day is to achieve a just and lasting peace in Ukraine. That is why we support Ukraine, that is why we are imposing sanctions against russia, and that is the same reason why we can participate in all peace talks to achieve a just and lasting peace in Ukraine," said the President of the European Council.
Costa recalled the constant contact with "Ukrainian friends to support them."
"Of course, we need to hold talks with russia at the right time to resolve our common security issues. We do not want to oppose President Trump's initiative and are waiting (for the results, - ed.), but at the same time we are ready to do what we need, because we also need to resolve issues related to the security of Ukraine," he stressed.
Answering a question about the new package of sanctions against russia, Costa noted that the EU's goal is "not to impose sanctions."
"Our goal is to achieve a just and lasting peace in Ukraine, to respect Ukrainian sovereignty, the territorial integrity of Ukraine, internationally recognized borders, because this is very important not only for Ukraine, but also for our own security and for global security. Because these values are universal values enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, and we need to adhere to international law to strengthen the multilateral system if we want a peaceful future in the world," Costa said.
