Russia may start a new limited military conflict even without ending the war against Ukraine.

This assessment was made to the German publication Welt by retired Bundeswehr Lieutenant General Jürgen-Joachim von Sandrart.

According to the general, the key factor is not only the Kremlin's military capabilities, but also political expediency for Moscow.

"The main question is not whether russia can do this, but whether it sees a convenient moment and benefit," von Sandrart said.

He believes that the Kremlin is already preparing for a potential expansion of the conflict outside Ukraine. The general named the Baltic region as one of the riskiest areas.

"Russia is on the verge of continuing the war outside Ukraine, especially in the Baltic region. If the opportunity arises," the military officer emphasized.

Von Sandrart drew attention to the active buildup of russia's military potential. According to him, the volume of arms production in the russian federation already exceeds the needs of the war against Ukraine.

Russia is also carrying out a large-scale reorganization of the army and forming new military units in the western military districts - from the borders with Finland to Poland.

At the same time, the general noted that a direct conflict with NATO would have much more serious consequences for the Kremlin than a war against Ukraine.

"This is what is currently holding russia back," von Sandrart concluded.
