In the Chernihiv Region, a forest fire that broke out following shelling on May 8 has changed direction and is spreading toward the russian territory. The area affected by the fire has nearly doubled in the past 24 hours.

It was reported by the Forests of Ukraine state-owned enterprise.

The area of the fire nearly doubled over the past 24 hours, reaching approximately 4,300 hectares. The fire has engulfed an area spanning about five kilometers along the border.

Some areas remain inaccessible to foresters due to the security situation. The enterprise also reported that equipment cannot operate in these areas due to drone attacks.

During firefighting operations, strikes on observation towers have been recorded. Forests of Ukraine released a video of such attacks and stated that this hinders the ability to respond quickly to fires.

Work continues on establishing firebreaks in accessible areas. Disc harrows and plows are also being used to treat areas between forest stands, along roads, and near settlements to create barriers against the spread of fire.

The agency reported that the fire front has changed direction — the fire is now moving toward russia.

As a reminder, efforts to extinguish a large-scale forest fire are ongoing in the Chornobyl Exclusion Zone. According to rescue workers, the fire has already spread over 1,100 hectares, and strong winds continue to carry the fire into new areas of the forest.
