Russia, the aggressor nation, refuses to continue negotiations in a trilateral format (Ukraine, the US, and russia) until Kyiv withdraws its troops from the Donbas region. Yuri Ushakov, an aide to the russian dictator, has stated this, according to the propaganda agency Interfax.

“Everyone understands — and I would say this includes the Ukrainian negotiators — that Kyiv now needs to take just one serious step,” Ushakov said.

According to him, the withdrawal of Ukrainian troops will allegedly lead to a cessation of hostilities and “open up prospects” for discussing “the prospects for a further long-term settlement.”

As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, on May 7, Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council (NSDC) of Ukraine Rustem Umerov arrived in the US for a meeting with US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff.

Shortly before that, Reuters reported, citing its own sources, that the reason for Umerov’s visit to the US was the impasse that negotiations on ending the war had reached.

As a reminder, on April 20, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that the arrival in Ukraine of US representatives Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff should not be treated as a major sensation, since the Ukrainian side is in constant contact with them and is awaiting the results of the negotiations.

And on May 2, the Kyiv Independent, citing informed sources, reported that US President’s special envoys Witkoff and Kushner had canceled their trip to Kyiv, which had been planned for April.
