2,400 hectares of forest burning in border area of Chernihiv Region due to russian shelling

Main points
  • The area of the forest fire in the Chernihiv Region has reached 2,400 hectares.
  • The fire broke out on May 5 in the forests of the Yelynske and Tykhonovytske forestries.
  • The fire is complicated by the presence of explosives and russian UAVs.

A large-scale forest fire is continuing on the border area of the Chernihiv Region due to russian shelling, the area of which has reached 2,400 hectares. The Northern Forest Office reported this on Facebook.

The fire broke out on May 5 in the forests of the Yelynske and Tykhonovytske forestries of the Koriukiv forest district. The situation is complicated by the fact that the fire has spread to areas that may be contaminated with explosives, which significantly increases the risks during work.

"The fire broke out on May 5 in forest stands potentially contaminated with explosive objects," the forest office reported.

Full-fledged elimination of the fire currently remains impossible due to the difficult security situation and the constant presence of enemy drones over the disaster area. The activity of russian UAVs poses a direct threat to the lives of foresters and rescuers of the State Emergency Service. Currently, specialists are monitoring the situation and are taking measures to localize the fire at a safe distance from the state border, trying to prevent further spread of the flame.
