The United Kingdom is starting negotiations on joining the European Union loan program for Ukraine of EUR 90 billion. The Prime Minister is to make a corresponding statement during the summit of the European Political Community in Armenia.
This is reported by the Financial Times.
It is expected that Prime Minister Keir Starmer will announce the initiative. The loan program is designed for two years, and its approval was previously delayed due to the position of Hungary.
The funds are planned to be distributed as follows:
- about EUR 60 billion - for defense needs and the purchase of weapons
- another EUR 30 billion - for financial support and stabilization of the economy
According to the publication, London is interested not only in helping Ukraine, but also in access for British companies to future contracts.
On the eve of the summit, Keir Starmer met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Yerevan. The Ukrainian leader thanked him for the support and asked to convey his gratitude to Charles III for his position.
In turn, the British Prime Minister stressed the need for further pressure on russia.
"The United Kingdom is ready to do the necessary work with allies... to provide Ukraine with the support you need and ensure a just and lasting peace," he said.
Recall that the European Union is preparing to transfer the first tranche of a large-scale loan to Ukraine totaling EUR 90 billion. The funds will arrive in the second quarter of 2026 and will be directed to strengthening the defense industrial complex.
