The Donald Trump administration has not included funding for military assistance to Ukraine under the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative (USAI) program in the draft US defense budget for fiscal year 2027. This became known during hearings in the US Senate Committee on Armed Services.
The fact of the lack of funds for Kyiv was confirmed by the acting Pentagon finance chief, Jules Hurst. Answering a direct question from senators regarding the budget request, he stated: "Yes, that's right. There is no USAI funding in this budget."
It is worth noting that the USAI program has been a key tool for supporting Ukraine since 2016, under which the Pentagon ordered new weapons and equipment from manufacturers. If Congress does not amend the document by the fall, 2027 will be the first period in a decade without direct military assistance under this program.
Despite the exclusion of spending on Ukraine, the overall US defense budget is set to increase to a record USD 1.5 trillion. The document is currently under review, and the final decision will depend on a vote in Congress, where lawmakers have the right to initiate changes and restore funding for Ukrainian defense needs.
As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, the Pentagon has unblocked USD 400 million in military aid to Ukraine, which was approved last year.
